Kundala dam and lake

The tourist destination Kundala Dam is roughly 20 kilometres from Munnar. The Periyar River flows through it. The verdant western ghats surround this Dam. On the Western Ghats hills, cherry blossom trees bloom twice a year. It is where the famous purple Neela Kurunji flowers bloom. It blooms just once every twelve years. To appreciate the beauty of the surroundings, you can ride on a pedal boat, a rowboat, or a Kashmiri shikari boat above the nearby Kundala Lake.

Sitting next to the Kundala Dam Lake, you can take in the scent of tea plantations as well as the verdant surroundings of the surrounding hills. On Kundala Lake’s banks, you can ride horses and occasionally even elephants. There are also other minor activities available, such as balloon shooting.

Besides the viewpoint of Lockhart, there is a cave called “Malayil Kallan Guha”.There was a story behind it: the thief lived in the cave and disturbed the people passing by.

Top station

Eravikulam national park

Kerala’s Eravikulam National Park is in the Southern Western Ghats near Idukki. Eravikulam means streams and pools. It was preserved earlier and now with the prohibition of hunting, and the public got access later in 1978 and became a national park. It has a total area of 92 square kilometres. The area is at an elevation of 2000 meters; Anamudi is the highest peak at 2695 meters. Grasslands, shrublands, and Shola forests are the primary vegetation there. Turner’s Valley divides the park into northwest and southwest regions.

It is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. It is famous for Neelakurunji, which blooms once every 12 years.

It is crucial for regional freshwater sources, climate regulation, and irrigation. It houses India’s highest peak, Anamudi, and exhibits an extratropical climate.

The entry time of Eravikulam National Park is 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entrance fee is Rs. 225 for citizens of India, Rs. 95 for minors, and Rs. 420 for visitors from other countries. Additional charges apply to Rs. 335 for video cameras and Rs. 45 for ordinary cameras. The park is closed to visitors from 29th January to 31st March during the Nilgiri Tahr calving season.

Lakkom waterfalls

Munnar’s Lakkam Waterfalls, also called Lakkom Falls, are 7,300 feet above sea level. Unlike most waterfalls, this one begins on a plateau rather than a hill, making it curious. Lakkam Waterfalls originate on the Eravikulam Plateau and converge into a pool.

Hidden in a lush environment, A  forest of Vaga trees and large rocks surrounds the Lakkom waterfall. You have to climb the rocks to reach up close to the waterfalls. Apart from taking pictures, the falls are well-known for swimming and stone hiking.

Visitors can access Lakkam Falls every day of the week from 8 AM to 5 PM. Regardless of nationality, the inexpensive admission fee is INR 20 per person. Bringing your video gear and the camera is not an additional fee.

The Eravikulam National Park offers guided hikes to the waterfalls for those who enjoy hiking. It would help if you gave an extra charge of INR 100 per person for this. 

Little fish jump in the pool that collects all of the water from Lakkom Falls. The fish play at your feet as you walk in this pool. But it’s not dangerous like that. It is similar to receiving foot spa services without paying for them.

Wear waterproof shoes with a good grip if you intend to swim in the pool or even soak your feet and walk around in the refreshing waters. The pool’s floor is slippery and quite rocky. Having a change of clothes on hand is also a good idea.

At the foot of the Lakkam Waterfalls, they provide separate changing areas for men and women for the convenience of swimmers. You can also use the toilet facilities.

Chinnar wildlife sanctuary

It is in the Western Ghats. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature haven offering abundant flora, fauna, and scenic peaks. It’s the perfect destination for a weekend exploring India’s widespread wildlife habitat. It covers an area of 90.44 square kilometres. The sanctuary boasts pristine beauty and rich vegetation, making it a prime location for nature lovers.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary offers trekking options. Enjoy a thrilling wildlife safari to spot animals in their natural habitat. Jeep safaris are available, and you can also take your vehicle with prior registration. For a unique experience, stay in treehouses surrounded by the sounds of nature. 

Other key attractions include Thoovanam Waterfall, a Watchtower with panoramic views, and peaks like Viriyoottu Malai, Nanadala Malai, Kumarikkal Mala Peak, Vellaikal Malai, and Kottakombu Malai.

Nyayamakkad waterfalls
